Attic insulation removal: a clean start for new insulation
SFL Attic is a guide run by Terragroupe, LLC. We do not install anything and we are not booking jobs yet.
Removal takes old, wet or soiled insulation out of your attic, so new insulation goes on a clean, dry floor. National price guides list it at 1.00-1.50 USD per sq ft1. If you think your attic holds vermiculite or asbestos, stop, because that is licensed abatement work.

What you get
You get a clean, dry, open attic floor, and new insulation that can do its job. Insulation on top of wet or soiled fill does not.
- The result. Old, wet or soiled fill gone, with photos of the bare floor.
- The effort. Ask the installer to price removal and new insulation in one written scope, so one job covers both.
- The risk. Ask to see the price before work starts. If something unexpected turns up, the scope should say how a change is priced.
Stop first: asbestos and vermiculite
EPA says to assume vermiculite attic insulation contains asbestos, and to leave it alone 2. For any work that would disturb it, EPA says to hire a professional asbestos contractor 2. You do not need a test to take those precautions 2.
So do not sweep, vacuum, poke or move it. Keep children and pets out of the attic, and keep the hatch closed.
Removing asbestos-containing insulation is licensed abatement work. It is outside what this page covers. Hire a licensed asbestos professional to clear the attic first. New insulation can go in after that.
When old insulation should come out
Not every old layer has to go. Here is how to sort the cases:
- Wet or stained after a roof leak. Price guides say wet loose-fill should be removed, not covered 3.
- Soiled by rodents or other pests. Ask how the entry points will be sealed, or the problem comes back.
- Damp, musty or moldy. Find the moisture source first. New insulation over a damp attic repeats the problem.
- Hiding trouble. Old fill can sit on loose wiring, open ceiling gaps or ducts that need work. It may need to move so the work can be done.
- Dry, clean and thin. Leave it. Adding on top costs less, and the blown-in insulation page shows how.
How removal is done
Loose-fill is usually vacuumed out. A truck sits outside and a large hose runs to the attic. Batts are rolled up and bagged by hand.
The path to the attic and the ceiling below get protected, the installer wears protective gear, and the debris is bagged or hauled. Ask what happens to the old material and who pays the disposal fee, because county rules differ.
After removal
A bare attic floor is the best time to fix things. Look at the wiring, the ducts, the roof deck from below and the gaps around pipes and light fixtures. Seal the entry points pests used.
Then add new insulation on dry, clean ground. For most attics that is blown-in insulation. If your ducts sit in the attic, price spray foam too.
How the job goes, step by step
- Look. The installer checks what is in the attic and why it may need to go. If it could be vermiculite, work stops there.
- Protect. The path to the attic, the hatch and the ceiling below get covered.
- Remove. Loose-fill is vacuumed out. Batts are bagged by hand.
- Inspect. With the floor bare, the installer photographs wiring, ducts, the deck and gaps, and flags repairs.
- Seal. Gaps and pest entry points get sealed if your scope includes it.
- Photos. You get photos of the bare floor before new insulation goes in.
What changes the price
National guides agree on removal: Angi at 1.00-1.50 USD per sq ft1 and HomeAdvisor at 1.00-1.50 USD per sq ft4. Size sets the base. Then these move it:
- Type. Loose-fill vacuums out fast. Batts take more hand work.
- Condition. Soiled or wet insulation takes more care.
- Access. A long hose run or a tight hatch adds labor.
- Disposal. Fees and rules differ by county. Ask who hauls it and who pays.
- Extras. Air sealing and repairs are separate lines in a quote.
Our arithmetic: at 1.00-1.50 USD per sq ft1, removal from a 1,500 square foot attic comes to about 1,500 to 2,250 dollars (1,500 times 1.00 and 1,500 times 1.50). New insulation is extra. These are national guides, not South Florida quotes.

What is in writing, and the workmanship term
Your written scope should say what comes out and what stays, how it is removed and hauled, and who pays for disposal. It should also list the repairs and sealing included, the photos you get, and the price of each part, so you can compare bids line by line.
Ask for the workmanship term in writing: how long the installer fixes problems with their work. The term for removal may differ from the term for new insulation. We will publish the installer's term here once an installer signs.
How to size up your attic
- Take the Attic Heat Score. Answer a few questions about your home. You get a score and the reasons behind it. It is a starting point, and the Attic Heat Score page shows what it is based on.
- Know what a good check covers. A good attic check records the type of insulation, its depth in inches and photos of problem spots. Use that list when you talk to any installer.
- Ask for a written price. Ask for the scope, the product, the installed R-value and the price in writing. Nothing should start until you say yes.
- Compare and decide. Use the cost guide to compare quotes. If your attic already has enough insulation, you may not need work.
- See the finished job. Ask for photos and a depth reading after the work, so you can see the result.

What this site gives you now
This guide is built to remove guesswork, so you can decide from a straight answer with no pressure.
- A way to size up your attic
The Attic Heat Score shows how likely new insulation is to help. Then find the type of insulation, how deep it is and what needs fixing first. - Prices you can compare
Price ranges come from named national guides, each with its source. Ask any installer for the scope, the product and the price in writing. Nothing should start until you say yes. - The right product for your house
Blown-in when it is enough. Spray foam only when it fits your roof and your budget. - A photo habit
Take photos of the attic before and after any work, with a ruler for depth, so you can see the result. - The rebate rules
FPL pays a rebate only when your existing attic insulation is thin. The cost guide explains the rules, so you can see whether you may qualify. - What to ask for in writing
Ask any installer to put the workmanship term in your written scope: what it covers and how long it lasts. We will publish an installer's term on this site if one signs.
This site is free to read. It sells no work and takes no payment. If your attic does not need work, the guides and the score will say so. Any work is agreed in writing between you and the installer who does it.
Attic Heat Score
Answer a few quick questions. The score shows how likely your attic is to benefit from more insulation. It is a starting point; a measured depth confirms it.

Questions people ask
How much does attic insulation removal cost?
Two national price guides agree: Angi at 1.00-1.50 USD per sq ft1 and HomeAdvisor at 1.00-1.50 USD per sq ft4. A real price needs a measured attic and a look at the fill. New insulation is a separate cost.
Do I have to remove old insulation before adding new?
No, not always. Dry, clean fill can stay, and new insulation goes on top. Wet, soiled or moldy fill should come out first 3. Read the blown-in insulation page for how topping up works.
I think I have vermiculite or asbestos. What now?
Stop. Do not disturb it. EPA says to assume vermiculite insulation contains asbestos, and to hire a professional asbestos contractor for any work that would disturb it 2. That is licensed abatement work, and this page does not cover it.
I have rodents in the attic. Do I remove the insulation?
Often the soiled part should go, and the entry points must be sealed. Sealing them is what keeps rodents out. Ask the installer how the gaps will be found and closed.
Does removal need a permit?
As of October 18, 2026
We could not confirm it for your city. A Florida law lets some owners skip a permit on work under $7,500 with a written request 5. Each building department decides, and the code has exceptions for existing buildings 6. Call yours before you hire anyone.
Does the FPL rebate pay for removal?
FPL's standards describe new insulation in an attic below R-8 7. We found nothing saying removal is paid. Ask FPL before you hire anyone.
